The First Time In History, A Female K-Pop Act Charts The No. 1 Bestselling Rap Song In America

The No. 1 Bestselling Rap Song In America

Last week, the No. 1 bestselling rap song in the U.S. was Drake’s “Way 2 Sexy,” which also features fellow hip-hop talents Young Thug and Future. The tune blasted onto the tally in first place, which wasn’t surprising, as it was by far the most popular track on the Canadian star’s massive new album Certified Lover Boy. It also ended up at No. 1 on the Hot 100, as it was the most-consumed track in the country.

Now, that successful single has been pushed to second place on the list of the bestselling rap songs in the U.S., and in its place, a female musician who primarily works in South Korea runs the show for the first time in history.

Lisa, best known as one-fourth of the globally-successful South Korean girl group Blackpink, debuts her song “Money” atop this week’s Rap Digital Song Sales, Billboard’s ranking of the rap tunes that actually sold the most copies in the past tracking frame. The cut marks her first No. 1, first top 10 and first appearance overall on the 15-space tally, and she makes history by dominating.

The Blackpink singer and rapper is now the first South Korean female musician (Lisa was born and raised in Thailand, but her career began in South Korea) to top the Rap Digital Song Sales chart, and she reaches the summit on her first try. Earlier this month, Lisa officially embarked on her highly-anticipated solo career with a two-track single album titled Lalisa, which instantly became a bestseller back in South Korea. Clearly, her American fans like it as well.

Now, the pair of tunes featured on the set have started appearing on Billboard lists in America as well. The title track “Lalisa” is the more popular of the two, as it rules the World Digital Song Sales chart and makes a historic appearance on the Hot 100. Both “Lalisa” and “Money” debut inside the top 10 on the all-genre Digital Song Sales list, landing at Nos. 6 and 8, respectively.

“Money” arrives at No. 1 on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart having sold just over 6,900 copies, according to numbers shared by MRC Data. That puts it ahead of the runner-up, “Way 2 Sexy,” which sold another 5,900 copies in its second tracking frame. Lisa’s first champion on this tally also beats fellow high-ranking smashes like Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow’s “Industry Baby” (No. 4, 5,000 copies) and even Eminem’s Oscar-winning “Lose Yourself” (No. 5, 3,450 copies).
